Pilates/Barre Q & A

What is Pilates?

Pilates was originally developed to help soldiers in World War I improve their physical fitness. Pilates integrates resistance training, stretching exercises, and targeted strengthening activities.

Many athletes and dancers use Pilates to stay in shape. But Pilates can also help during the rehabilitation process. Pilates exercises can encourage healing after an injury and promote a healthier, more supple spine.

During your Pilates sessions at Results Physical Therapy, certified Pilates instructor Jill Dart helps you to focus on the fundamental elements: your core muscles, your breathing, and the quality of your movements.

Pilates emphasizes the coordination of your mind, body, and spirit. Pilates is a resistance exercise that uses a series of controlled movements. It isn’t aerobic, so your heart rate doesn’t rise. Most people find Pilates peaceful and relaxing.

What is Barre?

Barre is a fitness technique that uses a combination of postures inspired by ballet, yoga, and Pilates. During a Barre class, Jill teaches you how to use a ballet barre as a balancing prop while you perform exercises that focus on isometric strength training.

What are the benefits of Pilates/Barre?

While many people enjoy Pilates or Barre just for the sake of physical fitness, they can be especially beneficial for a person who is recovering from an injury or surgery. Pilates and Barre help address the following aspects of rehabilitation:

Injury recovery

During your sessions, Jill helps you understand how your body works. This knowledge enables you to incorporate your whole body in the healing process, allowing you to recover faster.

Correcting imbalances

The whole-body approach involved in these exercises teaches you to correct and prevent common imbalances that affect how you move.

Preventing future injuries

Pilates shows you how to decrease the stress placed on your joints and soft tissue. By restoring a healthy balance of strength and flexibility, you reduce your risk of future injury.

Is Pilates/Barre right for me?

Pilates and Barre are often used in combination with physical therapy to produce the best effects. Some patients may turn to Pilates or Barre only after other options for physical therapy have been exhausted. Others may use these exercises from Day 1 as a part of their rehabilitation plan.

At Results Movement Studio, trained staff members like Jill can help you determine whether Pilates or Barre will meet your needs.
